The North Kigezi Community Empowerment project works with vulnerable families across the wider Rukungiri area and incorporates the existing ‘School Scholarship and Family Empowerment Scheme’ in Rukungiri.

Empowerment is key and the main thrust of this project is to offer strategies to help families in difficulty create a sustainable way of living, allowing them to support themselves.

By devoting time and resources, and giving advice through dedicated social workers, we’re hoping that vulnerable families in the area can find a way to support themselves and see their children through their whole school life. This is not always possible because circumstances sometimes make it difficult, but we want to try to give families the best possible chance to turn things around.

Community Empowerment

This is an opportunity to help vulnerable families get on their feet, support themselves and move forward towards a more sustainable way of life.

Families on the project generally live in very difficult circumstances often with no land or means of making an income. These can include widow headed households, the elderly and large families with over seven members.

Working with the social workers, together with the savings groups and the ‘Gifts of Love’ scheme, the aim is to assist families to start small projects, allowing them to earn some income, with a view to improving their lives and to help them get up on their feet.

School Scholarship and Family Empowerment scheme

At the heart of our School Scholarship and Family Empowerment Scheme is giving a child the opportunity to have a good education, whilst empowering their family or guardian to create a more sustainable way of living, allowing them to support themselves.

Children come from very poor families where home life is difficult. Some families may not be able to provide their children with regular meals, adequate clothing, or a comfortable place to sleep. Without help, children would never have the opportunity to go to school.

Children on the scheme are equipped with books and resources, uniform and shoes, and regular school meals (a huge mug of porridge at break time, and a hot meal of beans and vegetables). For some these could be their only meals of the day.

Scholarship children attend St Paul’s Community Primary School in Rukungiri. Life skills, such as planting and harvesting crops, supplement the curriculum along with many extra-curricular activities, providing a good foundation for life in Uganda.

Over the years, our work with the families has empowered many to earn and save enough of their own income to pay for their children to go to Senior School. This has worked very well. So, while children progress through school, families have time to build up their own resources. But of course, it takes time!

Savings groups

The savings groups bring together families who save together and give each other support. Backed by the social workers, they meet monthly, to save what little they have. This allows families to borrow for small income generating schemes and acts as a safety net in emergencies.

Gifts of Love

Gifts of Love are gifts that help families get on their feet. These can be improved maize seeds, farm tools, small water tanks to collect rainwater, or small livestock such as pigs, goats or chickens. Social workers offer help and advice to families about how to generate income or start small businesses. ‘Gifts of Love’ are used as part of the ‘Family Empowerment’ and ‘Community Empowerment’ schemes.

Emergency food parcels and relief

Since April 2020, following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, we have been working with families to provide emergency food parcels and relief.

Where possible, we have encouraged families to find their own solutions, but many have experienced impossible conditions. In these circumstances, we are continuing to provide emergency food and medical relief. For others, we have been able to offer support by providing seed for planting, garden tools and small animals for rearing to encourage a sustainable way forward.

Food parcels include food that is chosen to provide a good balance of carbohydrates and proteins, along with soap. Each parcel costs £40 and should last a family for 4 to 6 weeks.
